State of the Republican Party in Missouri
As many of you are aware, the state convention of the Missouri Republican party is this weekend in Springfield, MO. The state chairman, Nick Myers, sent out an email to delegates and alternates earlier this week. In that email, he stated the following:
As Chairman, my goals for this election year are the defeat of the pro-abortion petition, the reelection of President Trump and Sen Josh Hawley, maintaining and increasing the Republican Congressional members, and retaining our majorities in the General Assembly. Thanks to your efforts in the last election, for the first time since the 1860’s there are no statewide elected Democrats in Missouri. When we have completed the primary election and nominated our candidates in August, we will all campaign together to elect Republicans and keep Democrats out of statewide office.
This sounds fantastic, doesn’t it? This presents a beautiful picture of what lies ahead, where we all hug and sing “Kumbaya” around a campfire.
You would think, given that the Republican party has a super majority in the Missouri legislature and every statewide elected office is held by Republicans, Missouri would be on a fast track to shrink the size of government and finalize the protection of life and the second amendment in our state Constitution by updating the disastrous Initiative Petition ratification process.
That is not happening. Anyone with half a brain can tell it is not happening. The grassroots Republican party has been very concerned with the Initiative Petition process for years, and party leadership in both the House and Senate have given it great lip service every year, but done nothing meaningful to actually get something done. Only in the 2024 session, after the newly formed MO Freedom Caucus forced leadership to get off their blessed assurances and actually address it has any action actually taken place. Even now, as I type this newsletter, leadership in the senate refuses to take action to protect the lives of innocent unborn babies because their pride was hurt when the MO Freedom Caucus displayed the Republican leadership they do not.
The lack of Republican things happening in Jefferson City isn’t just limited to IP Reform, and it isn’t limited to just this session. How about the budget? Republicans in Missouri are at least fighting for small government, right? In FY 2021, the total budget in Missouri was $30 Billion dollars, 33% of which was funded by the federal government. The FY 2025 recommended operating budget from the Governor, bastion of fiscal responsibility that he is (yes, my sarcasm is showing), is $51 Billion, with half of that coming from the federal government, along with all the accompanying strings and expectations from the federal administrative state.
I could go on, and on, and on. What is happening? Has the Republican party simply abandoned its conservative roots? Has the Overton Window shifted so much? I don’t believe so, and I’ll tell you why. Look at the GOP Party Platform for the state of Missouri, and you will find that all of the conservative values that We The People still care about are represented there. In fact, if you review the proposed GOP Party Platform that is being presented at the state convention this very weekend, you will find that it is at least as conservative as the previous version, if not significantly more so, with new language that seeks to limit the new and creative ways both state and local bureaucrats used to try to force experimental compounds into us and lockdown businesses during the plandemic. In fact, grassroots conservative Republicans across the country are facing GOP leadership at the local and state level that are entirely out of touch with the conservative base of the Republican party.
The Struggle for the Soul of the GOP
If the grassroots of the party has not abandoned conservatism, what is happening that we cannot seem to get Republican things done in Jefferson City? The best way I can explain it is with a simple acronym: RINO. That stands for Republican In Name Only, and that, my friends, is why Republican things are not getting done in Missouri. This acronym gets thrown around a lot these days, sometimes justifiably, and at other times not. The basic definition is a person who claims to be a Republican, believing in Republican ideas (see the MO GOP Platform I mentioned above), but their actions and votes do not reflect what they claim. Let me be clear, there are many, many instances where Republicans can disagree on the best way to implement Republican ideas. That does not mean one or the other is a RINO, and we need to be very careful in labeling someone a RINO prematurely, or unfairly. I am specifically talking about repeat offenders that, either through their action, or inaction, do not support Republican ideas about government (again, see the GOP Platform). Using that term without good reason will reduce its impact to the point that it is meaningless.
There are many of these RINOs in elected office in Missouri, but their goals are not as aligned as you might think. For some, it is as simple as being a democrat in Republican garb. For others, it is about money and power, and so they do what special interest money tells them to. Yet still others see politics as a social club, and an opportunity for influence and rubbing elbows with the elite. Quite often, it is a mix of all these things. Regardless, furthering the conservative cause of Republicanism is not a priority for them, and once they have been identified, they need to be marginalized until they can be removed from office at the next available opportunity.
Unfortunately, RINOs are in control of the state party, the governor’s office, and the state legislature. This, by definition, puts We The People, who still care about conservatism and Republican things, directly at odds with the RINOs in state leadership. These RINOs have made plain their contempt and disdain for the “little people”, and have no interest in working with us. Given this reality, conflict is inevitable if we want things to change. We can embrace that fact without sacrificing our integrity or our resolve to change the status quo as long as we stay respectful, but refuse to abandon our core principles.
I know I’ve covered this topic before, but so much of what is happening in our state and the nation comes back to this right now, it bears repeating. It is also why it is so important for each and every one of us to get involved. Those of us who are already in the fight are taking steps to try to secure the GOP for conservatives, and you can see those efforts both in the actions of committed legislators, like the MO Freedom Caucus, and in various central committee leaders across the state, like REPACCMO, who are fighting to see candidate vetting implemented in as many counties and as many grassroots groups as possible. The RINOs are actively opposing us, and they will use every tool at their disposal to shut us down and marginalize us. The only way to prevent that is for each of us to get involved and get active.
MO Freedom Caucus And The Status of IP Reform
The MO Freedom Caucus has been accused of being “divisive”, “disruptive”, and “disrespectful” of the “process of governing”, when the reality is that they have been the only ones willing to step up and insist that the Republican party that is so proud of their “super majority” actually DO Republican things, like protect the life of the unborn by passing IP Reform.
Aaron Dorr, head of the Missouri Firearms Coalition (great organization, by the way. You should support them!), gave an update on some of the shenanigans that have been happening both this week, and all session long, in Jefferson City, particularly the actions of Sen. Cindy O’Laughlin.
If protecting the lives of thousands of innocent unborn babies by changing the Initiative Petition process in such a way as to prevent the mob from enshrining abortion in our state constitution is not the occasion in which to step outside the normal slow-walk of legislation through the quagmire of government inefficiency, what could possibly qualify?!! Any supposed leader in the Republican party that does not see that has no business claiming the name. This goes well beyond Caleb Rowden and Cindy O’Laughlin.
Let me be as clear and specific as I can…
The Republican party platform, both existing and proposed, state plainly that our party is PRO-LIFE. WHO is standing for these innocent lives in the MO Senate? Beyond the halls of Jefferson City, WHO in the MO GOP party leadership is calling out Rowden and O’Laughlin for their betrayal of the unborn? WHO in the local central committees is calling them out? The democrats and RINOs in the senate are claiming that the filibuster the MO Freedom Caucus used this week to force leadership to vote on IP Reform was a miserable failure. However, Tim Jones had this to say:
We will see if commitments made become commitments kept by Senate leadership. Regardless, the MO Freedom Caucus are the only ones that consider IP Reform the priority that you and I do, and I support them completely in taking such drastic measures to ensure this passes this session. Shame on every other senator that did not consider this issue important enough to step outside the normal process to make this happen, especially given how many years they had to get this done, but sat on it.
